Lessons: What to Expect
My studio is located in my home right outside of Indiana, Pennsylvania. Private instruction is given in 30 or 45-minute time slots, dependent on skill level and age, on a weekly basis. We don't meet during major holiday weeks, and have a few weeks off during the summer. Tuition is paid on a monthly basis. My rates are $66/month for 30 minute lessons and $98/month for 45 minute lessons. (Please see Preschoolers and Kindergarteners for their unique program and rates.)
Lessons with me are fun, but not lackadaisical; professional, yet personable; challenging, but not overwhelming.
I approach my lessons in a cheerful yet efficient manner. You can expect to get a great deal done in a short amount of time. You might be surprised how quickly each lesson passes! During your time with me, and as is appropriate for your age and needs, you can expect to do many of the following:
-Memorize music
-Play rhythm games
-Learn from and critique pianists on YouTube
-Sight-read often
-Sing (and maybe dance!)
-Explore many different genres of music
-Play, by ear, the melody to your favorite songs
-Improvise
-Play duets with me and other pianists
-Compose your own music
-Analyze current and historical music
So... as you can tell, the typical lesson won't be a dry run-through of your lesson books. Your lesson books will absolutely be the foundation of your learning process, but I love to supplement with extras.
